Regional Tournament Watch: Friday

Weather played havoc with Thursday's schedule, so some games were pushed back, but there were some games played anyway...

Congratulations to these regional champions, who punch their tickets to Jeffersontown...

2nd Region: #7 Henderson County (d. #19 Hopkins County Central 9-1)
What a performance from the Colonels, who began their week with a thrilling comeback against the #1 team in the state and finished it with a dominant win over the Storm.

5th Region: #9 North Hardin (d. Central Hardin 1-0)
One run was enough for the Trojans, who ride the future University of Kentucky arm of Jennifer Young to a regional championship, the first since 2002.

11th Region: Woodford County (d. #14 Lafayette 1-0 in 13 innings)
Upset city, baby! The Generals seemed poised to take the title in easy fashion with Dunbar already gone, but the Yellow Jackets persevere for the big win. Could they be the sleeper at state?

The following regions will play their semifinal games today: 6, 7

The 9th Region will play one first round game: Boone County vs. Conner

The following regions will play their championship games: 1, 3, 8, 10, 12

The Top Ten Games of the Day...

10) Boone County vs. Conner (region 9 semifinal)
The winner of this game will play Ryle in the 9th Region Championship. Good luck to you.
9) George Rogers Clark vs. Montgomery County (region 10 championship)
The winner of this game will play Greenwood in the first round of the state tournament. Good luck to you too.
8) Danville/Pulaski County vs. West Jessamine (region 12 championship)
No score has been reported from the Danville/Pulaski County game, but the winner will face a stiff test in the 12th region final against West Jessamine.
7) Holy Cross vs. Bullitt East (region 6 semifinal)
Both teams have flown under the radar in the 6th region this season. Which team will get the chance to prove themselves worthy in the 6th region final?
6) Grant County vs. Oldham County (region 8 championship)
Grant County took down Shelby County to get to the finals. Can the Braves finish off Oldham County and go to the state tournament? Remember, they've already beaten Ryle...
5) Christian Academy-Louisville vs. Assumption (region 7 semifinal)
As I mildly predicted, CA-L upset Manual. Now they face Assumption, but whoever wins this game will be the heavy underdog in the 7th region championship.
4) #6 Reidland vs. Heath (region 1 championship)
This Paducah battle has been seen many times before. Do the Pirates have enough guts to upset the Greyhounds?
3) #5 Owensboro Catholic vs. Muhlenberg North (region 3 championship)
For the last 80 years, it's been Owensboro Catholic and Grayson County at this stage. This year, the North Stars have replaced Grayson County; can they upset Catholic and end their reign of terror in the 3rd region?
2) Pleasure Ridge Park vs. #24 Butler (region 6 semifinal)
It's a matchup between (probably) the two best teams in the 6th region. Can Butler clear this roadblock after being favored in the 6th region all year long?
1) #13 Mercy vs. #8 Ballard (region 7 semifinal)
Both teams were up and down this season in the 7th region, but it appears that both the Jaguars and Bruins are playing their best when it counts the most. The team that wins this game will be favored tomorrow night when the 7th region punches its ticket for nearby J'Town.

  • The 11th Region championship game was a classic. Anyone who followed the 11th closely new that Woodford County would be a factor because of pitcher Kristin Perry. She transferred to Woodford mid-year from Dunbar. She held Lafayette to four hits and struck out 23 in 13 innings.

Kylee Johnson, Lafayette freshman pitcher, was almost her equal going nine innings and allowing one run. She had pitched all 14 innings of Lafayette's 1-0 win over Lexington Catholic in the district tournament and then went 7 innings in the 2-1 win over Scott County in the region semifinals.

The 11th is loaded with good young pitchers. Perry is a freshman, Johnson is a freshman, Brani Ore at Dunbar is a freshman, Jennifer Pelfrey at Dunbar is a sophomore and Karneisha Johnson at Henry Clay is a sophomore. They all have different styles of pitching but they all get the job done.

  • I like Montgomery County's chances in the 10th. If not this year then in future years. They start Pitcher-Junior, Catcher-Soph, 1st-Soph, 2nd-Fresh, SS-Sr., 3rd-Jr, LF,CF,RF-Sophomores. If the centerfielder pitches, the 2nd baseman goes to center and another freshman plays 2nd. Plus they have an 8th grader that comes in as relief pitching. Then they have a freshman DP that has blazing speed that plays some CF. Could be team to watch!

  • Franklin Co., also in the 11th region, has a good young pitcher as well. 7th grader Emily Hampton pitched well in a 3-2 loss to Woodford (vs Perry) in their district final last week.

  • Good point about Emily Hampton. She looked good against Lafayette. Miranda Buchanan from Western Hills is another good, young pitcher, a freshman I think.

  • Mercy defeated Ballard 7-2. Mercy scored 5 runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the 5th inning before Ballard scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th.
