About Monday and Then Tuesday

Here are some scores that caught my eye from Monday's action...

--Hopkins County Central d. #3 Henderson County 4-2
At first glance, it's a giant upset in the 2nd region. However, the Colonels did not send their ace Stacy Whitmer to the circle for this one, continuing a trend from Henderson County of not throwing the ace against top-flight competition in the region. But props to the Storm for the big win nonetheless.
Note: Thanks to Lazlo on Kentucky Preps for not only the score (that always helps), but also explaining Henderson County's pitching strategy. These details help put these wins and losses into context and help us predict the upcoming postseason play.

--#17 Lafayette d. Lexington Catholic 7-6
It's not quite as wide open as the 7th region, but the 11th region (Lexington) is as crazy as they come. Like Christian Academy-Louisville in the 7th, not many are talking up the Knights of Lexington Catholic; perhaps this narrow loss to the ranked Generals will spark some conversation.

--#20 Larue County d. Green County 2-1
I believe that the Hawks of Larue County pose the only threat to North Hardin in the 5th region, but are the Dragons of Green County, with this narrow loss to Larue, establishing themselves as a team to watch in the 5th?

As for Tuesday...

--Elizabethtown @ #2 Greenwood
--Apollo @ #3 Henderson County
--#5 North Hardin @ Fort Knox
--#7 Reidland @ Lone Oak
--#9 Male @ Holy Cross
--Glasgow @ #12 Allen County-Scottsville
--Whitley County @ #14 South Laurel
--Butler County @ #15 Grayson County
--Lexington Christian @ #17 Lafayette
--#18 Edmonson County @ Russellville
--#19 Butler @ South Oldham
--Hart County @ #20 Larue County
--#22 Scott County @ Henry Clay
--Woodford County @ #23 Anderson County
--Mayfield @ #25 St. Mary

Upset Alert...
--Madison Central @ #10 North Laurel
I'm not predicting an upset here, but the Indians have been one of those teams in the 11th region this season that have shown the ability to beat top teams. The Jaguars better be on their guard today.

Game of the Day...
--#13 Manual @ #11 Ballard
This game will do several things in determining the pecking order in the 7th region as we approach district and regional tournament action. The winner of this game might be deemed the regional tournament favorite.

  • Interested in knowing how this game would predict the 7th? Do either team have wins against top teams in the region?

  • Manual has wins over Male, Assumption and Sacred Heart.

Ballard has wins over Manual, Sacred Heart and Christian Academy-Louisville.

Of course, I don't see Mercy on either of those lists. Perhaps they are the regional favorite at this point, but picking a favorite in the 7th regional tournament will be pointless due to the wide open field.

  • Good points. However, as I look at records on the scoreboard, I see that Sacred Heart is having a down year and Assumption's lone quality win is over Mercy. Definitely a wide open region.
