Monday

For my weekend review, allow me to play a little word association with some teams I watched closely in Owensboro...

--Owensboro Catholic: "machine"
If the Aces get the lead-off runner on, a run will most likely score. This team, offensively, is so disciplined. If a team makes a defensive mistake against Catholic, it's like making two mistakes. This kind of offensive efficiency will keep Catholic a contender for the remainder of the season.

--Greenwood: "power"
Playing on a field in which the wind blew out, the Gators turned the Green field at Fisher Park into a home run derby. While Catholic will hit a single and then beat you with baserunning, Greenwood would rather just hit the ball over your head. The Gators will not go quietly.

--Henderson County: "strikeout"
Meanwhile, Henderson County's ace Stacy Whitmer wouldn't allow for any hits of any kind, as she hosted her own 'K' party against ACS and Ballard. In a weekend chalked full of great pitchers, there was not doubt which pitcher looked the most dominant.

--Allen County-Scottsville: "guts"
Let's ignore the Greenwood game for a minute. The Patriots showed the most grit and toughness this weekend, rallying from two 7th-inning deficits, including a four-run seventh to beat Owensboro Catholic. This continues a distinct pattern from ACS, who likes to back itself against a wall.

Feel free to add your own word associations for any team (and keep it clean as possible please).

Let's look ahead to Monday now...

#6 Henderson County @ Madisonville-North Hopkins
#9 Male @ Seneca
Pulaski County @ #11 North Laurel
#12 Mercy @ Moore
Henry Clay @ #13 Lafayette (2)
#17 Manual @ Providence (IN)
Boyle County @ #18 Scott County
#19 Edmonson County @ Warren Central
Marion County @ #20 Larue County
---
Sacred Heart @ #22 Butler
Shawnee @ #22 Butler
#22 Butler @ North Oldham
Note: All three games listed...I will clarify tomorrow which were played...
---
#23 Muhlenberg North @ Logan County
#24 Anderson County @ Central Hardin

Upset Alert...
#25 Barren County @ #1 Greenwood
It won't happen, but Greenwood's focus and mood will be tested post-Owensboro. But this is as much an alert about the Trojans, who beat Edmonson County on Saturday and own wins over PRP and Rockcastle County, along with losing only by one to ACS in Scottsville.

Game of the Day...
#16 Grayson County @ #14 Ballard
Two teams that have been slipping since the first part of the year, both the Cougars and the Bruins need a big win. Ballard did not play badly over the weekend, but did finish third in its pool and failed to score against both ACS and Henderson County.

  • Butler was actually schudaled to play Fairdale but all games have been cancelled!

  • Home Cookin' at Ballard!! Ballard got a win given to them by the plate umpire. Grayson Co. was down 1-0 in the top of the 7th. GC had the bases loaded, 2 outs, and a 3-2 count. The next pitch was in the dirt and called a strike. Ballard gets the win 1-0. Even some of the Ballard fans didn't like the way that ballgame ended on an obvious bad call.

  • I can feel your pain. There are 2 or 3 umpires up here in Louisville that should be umpiring Tee-ball. One of which seems to get a lot of the Ballard games. They are an embarrassment to fast pitch softball in the Louisville area.

It scares me to think that these clowns will likely be calling games in the state tournament.

  • The ball was not in the dirt.

I was standing right behind the plate, and the ball was clearly not in the dirt. (Grayson County fans were to the right of the plate). The ball was on the inside corner and at the girls knees. The batter was one of the smallest girls on Grayson Counties team. It was a good call! The batter was only 1 to 2 inches from the plate, as she was clearly over the obliterated batters box line, trying to take away the outside pitch from the Ballard pitcher.

Grayson County did not lost due to home cookin, they lost due to they struck out 14 times.

Please recall that last year, at Grayson County, Ballard lost 1-0 on a totally blown call by the home plate umpire on a pop up to right field. The base runner at third did not tag up on the catch and ran home, and the home plate umpire would not call her out, because he did not see the tag, (both the home plate umpire and first base umpire were watching the play, not the base runner at third base). Before the game, the home plate umpire bragged to some of the fans behing home plate that the Grayson County coach had given him a ride to the game.

If you think that Ballard got home cookin in the game last night, what goes around comes around.

  • If you were standing right behind the plate then you must have been the umpire who made the bad call. If you were not the ump then you couldn't have seen the ball in the dirt because your view would have been blocked by the ump and the catcher. From the side where Most of the GC fans were standing the ball was in the dirt about 6" behind the plate which was an obvious BALL FOUR!! If it wasn't a bad call then why was the ump who made the call over heard saying " I guess I missed that call", as he was making his way off the field? Ballard got the win on a bad call,That's all.

  • One blown call never costs a team an entire game. If Grayson County had scored some runs during the first 6 innings, they would have not been in the position that they were in at the end of the game.

Umpires missing calls is part of the game, they are human, and are going to make mistakes just like the players, coaches and fans make mistakes.

I have seen the umpires that called the game last night on many occasions, and they are top notch, but just like you, they do make some mistakes.

    Get over it!!!

  • Ballard player said top of ball was right at knee level over the inner corner of plate and drop after thru the zone.

    Bottom line...too close to watch on a 3 - 2 pitch.....
