Soggy Thursday and Weekend Tournament Watch

Thursday was washed out in many locales around the state, but several games were played, and they were big ones...

--#12 Allen County-Scottsville d. #15 Grayson County 8-7
The Patriots score 7 in the 5th innings with 2 outs to top the Cougars despite a rash of defensive miscues. It appears both of these teams have a ways to go in order to challenge their respective regional favorites, Greenwood and Owensboro Catholic. ACS's defense will be further tested this weekend at the Owensboro Catholic Tournament.

--#7 Reidland d. #25 St. Mary 2-1
Perhaps the 1st region is not a Greyhound shoo-in after all. One day after being pushed to the limit by Lone Oak, Reidland survives a road test at cross-town St. Mary. While the 2nd, 3rd and 4th regional tournaments will grab the majority of the attention out west, keep your eye on Reidland as possible upset bait in the 1st region tournament.

--#6 Christian County d. Lyon County 6-0
The Lyons have had a great year, but it looks as if they won't be competing for the 2nd region title. The list of contenders in the wide open 2nd is probably four: Chrisitian County, Henderson County, Hopkins County Central and Union County. However, to Lyon County's credit, they are one run shy of allowing the fewest runs in the 2nd region.

Now, for our Weekend Tournament Watch...

Lowe’s Classic

Site: London

Teams Participating: #10 North Laurel, #13 Manual, #14 South Laurel, #20 Larue County, Estill County, Rockcastle County, Dixie Heights, Assumption, Russell, Shelby Valley

Analysis: While most of the state’s powers are in Owensboro, several do make the trip to London in this very solid tournament. The Laurels, combined with Manual and Larue County, form an interesting contenders list. But don’t count out any school in this field; all have the capability of beating each other.

Pick to win: #13 Manual

Darkhorse(s): Russell, Rockcastle County

Other tournaments to watch...

Rockin Round Robin
Lady Flash Invitational

Fairdale Lady Bulldog Classic
Bourbon County Invitational

  • Hey Ben, any more details on the ACS game, did Ogles pitch the whole game, did they throw Cornwell and Ogles, if so who did the runs get scored on. Was it the short game that gave ACS's defense trouble?

  • Ogles threw the whole game, but the defense let some runs score that were not earned. Grayson County jumped out ahead 4-0 in the third inning and Ogles gave up only one hit in that frame.

But I'm thrilled with the fact that ACS scored seven innings in one inning, and all with two outs no less. I haven't seen that offensive "spurtability" in the games I've watched them this season.

I'm not for sure, but I'm willing to bet that it was Grayson County's short game and slapping that gave ACS fits. I think Grayson County is one of the best in the state at that type game.

  • who pitched for Grayson?

  • Houchin pitched for GC and was releived in the sixth by Schultz. Aggressive base running was the key to GC going up 4-0. Rain played a big part in ACS scoring 7 runs in the 5th as GC had trouble getting to the balls hit to the outfield. It was an exciting game as usual and both teams played hard.

  • hey ben, the reidland-st mary game wasnt that close. reidland was leading 5-1 but was called with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th because the field had gotten to wet from rain.
