Tuesday, Wednesday

A few games from Tuesday that are worth mentioning...

--#13 Manual d. #11 Ballard 5-1
The Bruins have not tested themselves against many of the 7th region's best this season, but when they have, they've usually lost. Right now, don't expect Ballard to repeat as 7th region champions. As for the Crimsons, this win puts them right at the top with Male and Mercy.

--#7 Reidland d. Lone Oak 3-1 (8 innings)
The list of challengers for the Greyhounds in the 1st region appeared to be short (St. Mary), but perhaps the Purple Flash of Lone Oak served notice in this district battle.

--Rockcastle County d. Danville 2-0
After their win against Lafayette in the Christian County Tournament, I assumed the Admirals were the team to beat in the 12th region. However, newcomer Rockcastle County has designs on returning to the state tournament, this time from the 12th region.

Now, here's the action for Wednesday (but the weather looks grim)...

#1 Owensboro Catholic @ South Spencer (IN)
Daviess County @ #2 Greenwood
#4 Ryle @ Conner
#6 Christian County @ Barren County
Moore @ #13 Manual
Butler County @ #18 Edmonson County
#24 Pleasure Ridge Park @ Fairdale

Upset Alert...
#8 Dunbar @ Lexington Catholic
Dunbar cleaned house at their Round Robin tournament over the weekend, and thus flew up the rankings from last week. However, the Knights are dangerous and often overlooked in the 11th region.

Game of the Day...
#23 Anderson County @ #22 Scott County
The Bearcats lost to Woodford County yesterday, but a win in Georgetown will make it a good week. The Cardinals will look for the win here against a former 8th region rival.

Later today, I will spotlight some possible sleepers for the state tournament in Who's The Next Estill County? Teams featured will include Union County, Anderson County and Russell.

  • I would not count Ballard out of contention just yet. They played the Manual game without five senior starters. Also of note, Scorebaord shows Male at 14 and 2 for their last 16 games. Their #1 pitcher was not on the mound during those two losses.

Manual, Male, Mercy, & Ballard. Practically a toss up between these four with Assumption and CAL capable of an upset at any time.

Districts and Regional will be very interesting.

  • Good point about Ballard. I saw that about their seniors on KY Preps right after I posted this morning. It certainly changes the context of that game last night. Thanks for the heads-up on here as well.

You're right about the 7th region...it's gonna be wild.

  • Also interesting is the fact that Male, Manual and Mercy are in the same district with Male and Mercy playing in the opening round of the District Tournament. Quality team going home early.

  • On the Ballard-Manual game last night, note that Ballard used their ace while Manual pitched a freshman. Regardless, in the 7th region, keep your eyes focused on Mercy who beat both Ballard (7-0) and Manual (4-1).

  • Mercy is definetly a very good team and a team to watch. But, I see where Male beat Mercy 9-3 in their opener and I read in an earlier post that Males top pitcher was not on the mound in Mercys win over Male in the second game. Just makes things that much more interesting.

Who ever makes it out of the 7th region will likely do very well in the State Tournament and should be considered as one of two or three favorites.
