Monday review and Tuesday preview

From Monday's action...

--#14 Ballard d. #16 Grayson County 1-0
These were two struggling teams that were in search for a quality win. Ballard got it, but a questionable third strike call in the 7th inning in the middle of a Cougar rally left some Bruin fans unsatisfied. Nevertheless, it is a quality win for Ballard, while the Cougars headed back to Leitchfield with another close loss.

--#1 Greenwood d. #25 Barren County 5-0
The Trojans looked to become the definitive third team in the 4th region, and despite losing to the Gators, perhaps they made a statement that warns Greenwood and ACS for the regional tournament. Greenwood gets a quality win after the Owensboro affair.

--#13 Lafayette d. Henry Clay 2-0, 3-1
The Generals, along with Dunbar, are the two favorites in the 11th region, but Henry Clay might have added itself to the long list of challengers, which includes Woodford County, Bryan Station, Lexington Catholic, Western Hills, Madison Central, and, most notably, Scott County.

Here's a look at some notable games on Tuesday...

Apollo @ #3 Christian County
#8 Reidland @ Ballard Memorial
#9 Male @ Pleasure Ridge Park
#15 South Laurel @ Pulaski County
Oldham County @ #17 Manual
#18 Scott County @ Franklin County
Warren East @ #19 Edmonson County
#21 Union County @ Madisonville-North Hopkins
#23 Muhlenberg North @ Hopkins County Central
Logan County @ #25 Barren County

Upset Alert...
#10 Dunbar @ Bryan Station
#13 Lafayette @ Bryan Station
Call it Judgment Day for the Bryan Station Defenders. Under the radar all year long, the Defenders look to make a statement in the 11th by hosting this doubleheader against two of the region's best. With a sweep, Bryan Station instantly becomes a top contender for the regional championship.

Game of the day...
#1 Greenwood @ #5 Owensboro Catholic
What could have been at the Sports Warehouse Classic will now be today in Owensboro. This matchup between arguably the two best teams in the state may very well be a state championship preview. With this win, Greenwood will leave no doubt who the #1 team in the state is. But if Catholic wins, as many as five teams could lay claims to the top spot.

---

For those who were wondering, here are a few more items from Saturday in Owensboro...

--The semifinals in the championship bracket were both terrific. The ACS-Owensboro Catholic game was back and forth all the way. Both teams hit the ball well, despite which pitcher was throwing for either team. Owensboro Catholic scored 3 in the top of the 7th, but ACS rallied for 4 in the bottom of the inning to win the game. In the second semifinal, Greenwood likewise rallied for a 3-2 win over Christian County. It looked like the Colonels would hold the hot-hitting Gators down, but Greenwood got hot in the 5th and 6th innings to win the game.

--There hasn't been much chatter about the game going on opposite of ACS-Greenwood. Male and Mercy played for the #2 seed championship. These two teams meet in the first round of the DISTRICT tournament, but both teams appeared to play their best personnel (if anyone can verify that, thanks) as the game went down to the wire with Male winning 5-4.

--Despite cries on the comment threads of Ballard being overrated, I didn't think the Bruins looked that bad. They hit the ball well against Daviess County, and then played pretty well against Henderson County considering Stacy Whitmer was throwing a lot of strikes. However, in retrospect, #14 is a little high for the Bruins, but rankings don't mean squat.

--Finally, I'd like to congratulate Owensboro Catholic for holding a great tournament. The rain held off, the wind stopped blowing when it got really cold, and the tiebreaker idea in pool play was ingenious. The championship game began only 30-45 minutes after its scheduled time.

  • Regarding the Ballard/Grayson County game, you got it right. Both teams are struggling and the third-strike call was delayed and late. Grayson County fans were furious and some of the Ballard fans were embarrassed.

  • To close to watch......

  • In regards to the Male/Mercy game...good game, but Male threw 2 sophomores (probably their 3 and 4 or 4 and 5 pitchers in the rotation). All others were normal starters for both teams.

  • What was the tie breaker?

  • Ballard is probably ranked about where they should be, as they have beaten Scott County, Larue County, Manual, Assumption, Grayson County, Christian Academy, Eastern, Sacred Heart, Fern Creek, Holy Cross and Oldham County, but have lost to Mercy, Manual, Butler, ACS, Henderson County and Christian County.

The top ten looks good, and reflects how the teams are currently playing.

  • In the Male/Mercy game...Mercy was up 3-1 when they pulled one of their varsity pitchers and put in their JV pitcher. Male scored 4 runs on the JV pitcher and then Mercy scored a run in the 7th to make it 5-4.

  • Concerning the tiebreaker question, I sort of worded that badly.

In pool play, if the game was tied after the time alloted for the game had expired, the game was declared a tie. I think out of 28 pool games, there was something like 6 ties, so it wasn't a huge number. It really helped keep the tournament moving along close if not on the scheduled time.

  • Well the upset alert was a bust, don't know if it was too much to take on two of the best teams in the city of Lexington and the State but Bryan Station did not pull the upset tonight. In fact Lafayette handed them a 4-0 loss and Dunbar handed them a 9-2 thumping which was called in the fifth because of the rain. It appears that just when Station may make game of it, the umps call it all in the interest of the players to keep anyone from getting hurt I guess, so they say who knows. In anycase maybe the thumpings will gear Station up for their district game with first round opponent Henry Clay.
